Boston Boating

After the snowiest Boston winter on record, we’re basking in the summer temperatures that are finally coming our way. Nothing says winter is over quite like getting your boat out on the water. Boating in Boston is now easier than ever, thanks to some great apps that bring everything from reserving dockage to checking the tides to your smartphone. Download these apps before you go boating and you can spend less time planning your outing and more time enjoying Boston from the water.

Dockwa – Offering one-tap reservations for docking and mooring, Dockwa has over 225,000 linear feet of docking available through their app. In Boston specifically, you can reserve spaces at Charlestown Marina, Liberty Wharf, and the highly convenient Constitution Marina among others. Dockwa lists prices as you search, so you can easily compare rates. The app also includes reviews from other boaters and lists amenities by marina to help you find the perfect place to dock.

DockHop – This easy to use app (and website) aims to make the process of finding short and long-term boat storage more convenient. You can search for marinas, check their availability, and even reserve storage space or dockage all from within the app. DockHop currently works with participating marinas throughout the northeast and according to their website they are working to add marinas all the time. You can even email them suggestions at info@dockhop.com if they don’t work with your favorite marina yet.

Boat Ramps – Created by TakeMeFishing.com, the Boat Ramps app lets you find your nearest boat ramp, wherever you are. With a database of over 35,000 boat ramps throughout the country, Boat Ramps will not only locate ramps for you, but also give you directions. You can have the app search using your current location or you can enter a city or zip code.

Yachting Weather – This app provides marine weather predictions customized to your geographic location. There is a free version that provides weather data in 6-hour intervals for the upcoming three days, or you can upgrade with an in-app purchase to Yachting Weather EXPERIENCE. This upgraded app provides weather predictions in 3-hour intervals for the next 5 days. Both versions include precise and accurate weather data from WEATHER365. This data, updated 4 times a day, provides wind direction and speed, wave height, frequency, and direction, the risk of storm and precipitation, as well as the basics like temperature and air pressure.

BoatUS – The weather and tide information in this app is helpful, but the ability to find local services and call for a tow could be a lifesaver. The one-touch “Call a tow” feature connects you to the BoatUS dispatch that is available 24/ 7. The app can even access your latitude and longitude when you have gone far out of cell phone range.

Boston Whaler – Links to local tides and weather forecasts, as well as exclusive Boston Whaler content, can be found here. This app serves as a portal to Whaler social networking sites and has information on all Whaler events and rendezvous for the season. On days when you’re not out on the water, you can peruse information on all Whaler models, including photos and videos as well as specs. A great resource for all boaters, but a definite must-have for Boston Whaler enthusiasts.
