Calling All Film Junkies: Movies Shooting in Boston This Summer

I wouldn’t exactly call myself a film junkie. While I love movies, I generally don’t obsess over them the way I obsess over music. (The Karate Kid, a childhood favorite, would be the exception.) But something pretty great is happening in Boston this summer: Denzel Washington, one of my favorite actors of all time, is coming to town. Word is he’ll be here in June to shoot The Equalizer, which will join a long list of great movies filmed in Boston. Think Good Will Hunting, The Social Network, The Departed, and The Town, just to name a few.

The fact that the Denzel Washington will be in Boston—just minutes from where I live—is pretty incredible. It means that with a little planning and a lot of luck, I might just run into him, and maybe take a photo that will undoubtedly earn dozens of Facebook likes.

As an added bonus, the premise of the movie he’s staring in sounds pretty interesting: The Equalizer is a Hollywood remake of a 1980s television show about a middle-aged, retired covert operative who, to repent for the guilt of past misdeeds, solves problems for those in need. The character is described as complex and mysterious, which sounds like the type of role that Washington can sink his teeth into. And the film reunites him with director Antoine Fuqua; the two worked together on Training Day, which earned Washington an Academy Award for Best Actor.

While Washington is obviously the main draw for me, according to, Chloe Moretz will play the female lead, and Melissa Leo (who appeared with Washington in 2012’s Flight) will also star.

Another reason for would-be paparazzi to rejoice this June is that The Judge will be filming in Boston, as well. While this news doesn’t have me quite as giddy, I have to admit the ensemble cast is pretty impressive. The Judge stars Robert Downey, Jr. as a successful lawyer who returns home for his mother’s funeral and learns that his estranged father—also the town judge—may be responsible for her murder. Also starring in the David Dobkin-directed dramedy are Robert Duvall, Billy Bob Thornton, Vincent D’Onofrio, Leighton Meester, and Vera Farmiga, who memorably starred in The Departed as a therapist caught in a love triangle between Leonardo DiCaprio’s troubled undercover cop and Matt Damon’s mole.

Unfortunately, information about shooting locations and schedules for both movies is sketchy at best. Production Weekly tweeted that production in Boston began on June 3 for The Judge and is scheduled for June 17 for The Equalizer. But details about exactly when and where filming will take place—and therefore, when and where actors such as Denzel Washington might be spotted—is under wraps. The safe bet is to be on the lookout for anyone who looks like a movie star in your daily travels this summer. At least, that’s my plan.

Other recent movies filmed in Boston include American Hustle, starring A-listers Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jeremy Renner. The movie tells the true story of a con artist and his partner in crime, who were caught and ultimately gave up fellow con men and crooks in the 1970s, exposing corruption that extended into the government. It was filmed in Boston and the surrounding area throughout the spring, and some lucky fans who were in the right place at the right time snapped pics of the stars in goofy 1970s gear. Notably, production was suspended in late April while police launched a manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombing suspects. Filming resumed shortly thereafter and ended in mid-May, when the cast celebrated with a wrap party at Bond lounge inside The Langham Hotel. Guess that’s a sign I need to start going to Bond again.

And on a related note, Jennifer Lawrence may not be out of town for long, as it’s been reported that the next installment of the wildly popular Hunger Games series could be filming in Boston in mid-September. While I haven’t yet become ensnared in the Hunger Games web, the inevitable hoopla surrounding a Boston shoot may be reason enough to jump on the bandwagon. [cf]skyword_tracking_tag[/cf]
