Comedy Shows in Boston Highlight Hollywood Stars

The Wilbur Theatre is bringing big names to Boston

It’s a growing trend in this city…if you want good food and even better drinks in the city, you have to head downtown. But, did you know it is also the best place for comedy shows in Boston?

The finest example of this is evident at downtown’s Wilbur Theatre over the next couple of months.

Beginning this week, a slew of Hollywood’s A-list comedians will be making appearances at the Wilbur. So, check out the lineup and make your plans for a night of sidesplitting laughter!

Amy Schumer

First up is the talented and brutally honest Amy Schumer, who will light up the stage on February 21. The stand-up comedian, actress, and writer placed fourth in the fifth season of Last Comic Standing. Schumer, known for her provocative and plunging humor, may not have much of an effect on those with thick skin. But for those who don’t—watch out!

“If you listen to what I’m saying, I’m just posing questions about things that aren’t talked about that often,” Schumer told Cosmopolitan.

And while her jokes might make you blush, Schumer insists that she isn’t trying to shock anyone—those are just her stories.

If you’re begging for more of Schumer’s bluntness after the performance, turn on your TV and catch her on her Comedy Central show, Inside Amy Schumer.

Tracy Morgan

Tracy Morgan, another Hollywood star comic, will closely follow Schumer’s act with his show on March 1.

Morgan, known worldwide for his years on Saturday Night Live (who can forget his Star Jones?) and 30 Rock, will be gracing the Wilbur stage with his honest and real humor.

Morgan is occasionally called a “loose cannon” and “unpredictable,” so this tour is a plan to “reeducate” people on him and not his caricature, he said.

“Comedy is knowing who you are when you come from imperfection. I come from the ghetto. I come from extreme poverty. When I talk about sex, that’s what I come from,” Morgan said in an interview in January.

Be sure to catch Morgan’s performance at the Wilbur—the all-new material is sure to get you laughing.

Patton Oswalt

Another Comedy Central regular, Patton Oswalt has also booked a show at the Wilbur, making March 21 a day to circle on your calendar.

Oswalt holds a special place in the hearts of Bostonians. The actor, who was recently nominated for Critics’ Choice Award, wrote a thoughtful and powerful post on Facebook in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings. Within three hours, the message had gone viral and the city had a new favorite.

“We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We’d have eaten ourselves alive long ago,” Oswalt wrote. “So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, ‘The good outnumber you, and we always will.'”

So, it comes without a shadow of a doubt that Oswalt will receive a warm welcome at the Wilbur. And make no mistake, Oswalt can be just as funny as he is poignant.

Aziz Ansari

The next Hollywood star planning to pay a visit to the Wilbur is the one and only Aziz Ansari.

Ansari anchors the star-studded February-through-April lineup on April 29, and that means it’s a night to treat yo’self.

The stand-up comedian, who stars on Parks and Recreation, will bring with him his unique criticism of pop culture and humanity’s troubles.

Whether he’s poking fun at the absurdity of “sexting” or joking about Kanye West’s fondness for jokes, Ansari is always on point when it comes to storytelling.

“With stand-up, it’s more interesting to hear about people’s failures than their successes,” Ansari said in an NPR interview. “It’s much more endearing to hear someone going through the same struggles we’ve all gone through.”

Make sure you catch Ansari while he’s in town. If you miss him while he’s away, download his latest comedy special, Dangerously Delicious.

With all these stars performing at the Wilbur, it is clear downtown is the place to be for top-shelf comedy in Boston. As Tom Haverford would say, get all ‘the ‘tails’ here. Enjoy.
