Millennium Tower Ceremony

City officials and developer Millennium Partners gathered outside the historic Burnham Building today to officially kick off construction of Millennium Tower Boston. Few projects have held the significance of Millennium Tower, the crowning achievement in Mayor Menino’s plans for Downtown Crossing. The redevelopment of the Filene’s block represents a fundamental shift in the identity of downtown Boston. Said Boston Mayor Thomas Menino during today’s ceremony, “The Filene’s site is synonymous with Downtown Boston. The start of construction celebrates the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the historic building and highlights the promising future that is in store for this neighborhood.” A mayor whose career has been largely dedicated to revitalizing downtown, his vision will finally come to fruition as Millennium Tower finds itself at the crossing of past and future.

For more than a century, the Filene’s building stood proudly at the corner of Summer and Washington, the intersection that’s become known as the hub of the universe. Once a symbol of innovation and energy, Filene’s transformed downtown into the throbbing commercial heart of the city. In addition to the wealth of identity wrapped up in the building’s history, Millennium Tower is surely a beacon of Boston’s future. With world- renowned Handel Architects at the helm, the completely restored Burnham Building will house innovative office space for advertising tycoon Arnold Worldwide. And at street- level, Roche Brothers will house its high-end retail grocery market as the first large-scale grocer to ever reside in Downtown Boston. The cornerstone of the development is the 625-ft. fluted glass tower, containing 425 residences with views never before seen from a Boston home. Seeding the neighborhood with the population density needed to activate the area, Millennium Partners seeks to establish downtown as a 24-hour neighborhood and will deliver the three components needed to do so: the ability to live, work, and shop in the neighborhood.

Millennium Partners is a developer that has proven its commitment to Boston time and again, having developed the fastest selling luxury property in the city, Millennium Place, the award-winning Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Residences, the Sports Club/LA, and the Loew’s Theatre along the Avery Corridor. With the restoration of the Burnham Building and the completion of Millennium Tower, Millennium Partners will realize the final piece of Mayor Menino’s vision to transform Downtown Crossing into Boston’s most dynamic and vibrant neighborhood.
